Throughout the Middle Ages and the modern period, both agriculture and livestock farming had a great effect on the economy of Rivas. Regarding to agriculture, cereal was the main crop. The ovine sector dominated the livestock farming.
Water has always been a constant matter of concern for the farmers of this area. Actually, there is written proof of it since the Middle Ages. In 1872 the reservoir of San Bartolomé, able to irrigate the more near lands such as Rivas, was constructed.
The 482 people that live today in Rivas don’t only make a living on the primary sector anymore. Instead, construction and retail are becoming more and more important in the economic activity.
Rivas is the only surviving village out of the ones originated around Ejea since the Christian reconquista, in the year 1105. There are documents which begin to mention Rivas as a neighborhood of Ejea since the year 1399.
SAN MIGUEL DE RIVAS CHURCH
The church, of Romanesque origin, began construction in the XIII century. This church is dedicated to Saint Michael. The construction was held back for several reasons and was completed by the end of the XVIII century. Icons of the two patron saints of Rivas, San Victorián and the Virgin Mary of the Angels, are kept inside the church among others: Saint Michael, Saint Anthony and La Dolorosa (Lady of the Sorrows).
Near Rivas we can find the San Bartolomé reservoir, where you can fish or practice water sports such as sailing and rowing. The groves by the riverbanks of the Arba, in Luesia, are captivating.
